Each time I teach a class in The Zentangle Method, I put on my apron with the CZT logo. In April of 2023 I ventured to Rhode Island and with 90 plus other tangling enthusiasts, I became certified. I learned about Zentangle in 2014 while at a clergy women’s spiritual renewal retreat. It was introduced as a spiritual practice – a way of centering, slowing down, connecting with the divine. This creative practice immediately resonated with my spirit. I have always had a creative side just bursting to get out, but have never felt very artistic. Can you believe it? The simple repetitive lines and shapes seemed to unlock something within me. But it was definitely the concepts, the philosophy – if you will – of The Zentangle Method – that seemed to capture me as much as the artistic actions. No mistakes. One stroke at a time. Process rather than product. Inclusion and an appreciation for diversity rather than conformity.
Self acceptance and compassion have been wonderful side-effects as well. I can tell when too much time has gone by and I haven’t tangled. But teaching a class and leading others into their own self-discovery is amazing as well. People who profess no real artistic ability are amazed at what they have created in a short time and something undoubtedly seems unlocked in them as well. For me it will always be something more than just art, just pen and paper – it is self-expression and self-care.
